Sarah Morton is the Virginia Poverty Law Center’s staff attorney for the Senior Legal Helpline. In that role, she empowers and equips older adults to solve their problems by providing them with the legal advice and referrals they need to overcome oppression and barriers, thus allowing them to lead engaged and fulfilled lives. She joined VPLC in 2022.
For 16 years prior to coming to VPLC, Sarah was an attorney at Blue Ridge Legal Services, the legal aid office serving the Shenandoah Valley. Blue Ridge Legal Services is a non-profit law office providing free legal services on civil topics to those who would otherwise be unable to afford an attorney. Sarah was the managing attorney of the BRLS Harrisonburg office for four years, mentoring and supervising other attorneys. Since 2015, Sarah has focused exclusively on clients aged 60+. Her interests include consumer law, restorative justice, and civil remedies for survivors of elder financial exploitation. She was a case supervisor for the UVA School of Law’s Economic Justice and Consumer Law Clinic, based at the Legal Aid Justice Center. Sarah has had an active role in two Multidisciplinary Task Forces to combat elder abuse. She previously served on the boards of her local Area Agency on Aging and a non-profit homeless shelter based in local houses of worship.
Sarah earned her J.D. from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 2006, and her B.A from the University of Virginia in 2003.
